A New Daughter of James Thomas and Sophia Ransom

Dave Momot (one of the Thomas relatives I’ve been working with on the Thomas family ancestry) wrote to me today regarding James Thomas (1783-1863) and Sophia Ransom (1792-1868).  He’s been going through cemetery records for Chazy, Clinton, New York:

I have contacted the town historian for Chazy. I told him of our “dead end” with James Thomas and asked if there are any old church records or otherwise that could possibly help us. He sounded interested and already recognized Dr. Luther Ransom’s name. He will call me back.

You may remember that I found two “inconsistencies” in the 1830 census for the James Thomas family. One was a male 80-89. (who could possibly be his father) A little more troubling was a female less than 5 yrs old who didn’t fit the names we know.  Problem solved. In the Riverview cemetery of Chazy there is a marker, “Thomas, Mary E. , daughter of James and Sophia, died 14 March 1830 age 11 years”  A note on the index says, ” Sophia daughter of Dr. Luther Ransom” That puts her between Luther and Jeremiah.

This is thrilling news.  Dave’s very good and usually comes up with gold.  I’m excited about finding another daughter of James and Sophia.  Dave and I have spent a lot of hours working on unraveling the mystery of this family, which is the oldest Thomas family we have so far.

About cthomas1967

Seeking to bring my ancestors out of the shadows of history and into the light. I have always been interested in history, and at a few different times I tried to do a family tree, but wasn't able to do it with the technology that was available then. On a business trip I visited the World War I Museum in Kansas City, MO and it was a very impressive establishment. While I was there I remember thinking, "Didn't my great-grandfather father fight in World War I? And wasn't his brother killed alongside him in some famous battle? I wonder if I can find out where he died." That's what started it all. View all posts by cthomas1967
