Zierke / Hadow / Schulz Records From Kreis Kolmar, Posen, Prussia

Recently a distant cousin of mine, Marlena Krzeminska, reached out to me to say that she had found some family records in the Polish archives among the records of the parish of Ujście (Usch, Kreis Kolmar, Posen, Prussia).  These are very exciting documents, and I’ll try to transcribe them and also put them in context below.

Nowa Wieś (Usch-Neudorf, Kreis Kolmar). Baptism on 25 Jul 1813 of the child Marianna (Marie Anna) Dorothea Hadow, born 19 Jul 1813, daughter of Christophus (Christoph) Hadow and Anna Christine Cyrke (Zierke), godparents Gottlieb Reutz and Dorothea Wengerann.

Marie Anna Dorothea Hadow baptism, 1813.

My 4x great-grandmother, Marie Anna Dorothea “Dora” Hadow (19 Jul 1813-2 Mar 1901), would eventually marry Friedrich Zierke Sr. (1806 – ?) and come to America in 1865.  She died in Harris, Marquette, Wisconsin and is buried there.

===========================================================================

Nr. 71. (Usch-) Neudorf. Baptism of Michael Hadow, son of Christoph Haudoh (Hadow) and Anna Christina Zyrke (Zierke), born 16 Aug 1821 and baptized 18 Aug 1821. Godparents: Michael Bepke Jr. and Elisabeth Christine Ruck.

Michael Hadow baptism, 1821.

Michael Hadow was the brother of the above-named Marie Anna Dorothea, and was my 5x-great-uncle.  He married Rosalie “Rosina” Floerke (1823-1910) about 1846 in Posen, and came to the US in 1881 aboard the “Ohio” with his wife, daughters Alwine, and Emilie, son-in-law Andreas Willegal, and granddaughter Agnes Willegal.  Michael and Rosina also had a son Johann Hadow (1848-1926) who came to Wisconsin separately in 1880.  Michael died in Harris, Marquette, Wisconsin on 9 Mar 1905.

===========================================================================

Jablonowo (Kreis Kolmar). Baptism of Friedrich Zierke (Jr.), son of the legitimate marriage of Friedrich Zierke (Sr.) and his wife Anna Dorothea Hagendorf (Hadow), who was born 16 Dec 1835 and baptized 18 Dec 1835. Godparents: Martin Schulz Sr., and Anna Louise Dumke.

Friedrich Zierke baptism, 1835.

Friedrich Zierke (Jr.) was my 3x-great-grandfather.  He came to the US with his parents in 1865 aboard the “Neckar” and settled in Wisconsin, first in Waukesha, then in Harris.  He married Anna Wilhelmine “Minnie” Schulz (1846-1921) in 1867 and they had nine children, five of whom survived childhood, including my great-great-grandmother Ottilie Caroline Zierke (1869-1945).  They farmed the family farm in Harris (which is still in the family), and “Fred” passed away there on 12 Sept 1912 from complications after surgery for intestinal issues.  He’s buried in Montello City Cemetery.

One remarkable thing here is that the “Martin Schulz Sr.” listed here as his godparent would eventually become his father-in-law, as Martin was the father of his future wife Anna Wilhelmine Schulz!

Erdmann Krueger Family Dies in Polchow, 1807

A pretty remarkable document.  An entire family to which I’ve been linked by DNA, all wiped out in the year 1807 in Polchow, Kreis Cammin, Pommern, Pussia.  The mother, father, and the only three known children all died in the same year.  All of them died of disease, and at least two died of a fever and two of consumption (Tuberculosis), but it’s not clear they all died from something related.

Nr. 1. Gristow. Death of the seamstress’s assistant, Sophia Krüger, wife of the farmer Joachim Rackow from Schwindsucht (consumption) at 55 years, 3 months, 2 days on 24 Jan 1807 (b 22 Oct 1751).

Nr. 12 Polchow. Death of the farmer Johann (Friedrich) Krüger from Sizzigan(?) fieber (some kind of fever) on 31 Jul 1807 at 51 years, 8 months, 3 days of age. (b 28 Nov 1755)

Nr. 19. Polchow. Death Engel Gruels, wife of the retired farmer Erdmann (Friedrich) Krüger from Nerven fieber (Typhoid), on 22 Oct 1807, aged 71 years and 18 days (b 4 Oct 1736).

Nr. 24. Polchow. Death of the retired farmer Erdmann Friedrich Krüger from Schar(?) on 11 Nov 1807, aged 81 years, 10 months 7 days (b 4 Jan 1726)

Nr. 26 Polchow. Death of Michael Krüger, son of the deceased, retired farmer Erdmann Krüger from Auszehrung (consumption) on 22 Dec 1807, aged 60 years, 5 months, 4 days (b 18 Jul 1747).

Michael Krüger was not married, to my knowledge.  So far I have found no record of a spouse or children for him.  He was also a half-brother to the other siblings as the mother, Engel Gruel/Gruels, was only 10 when he was born.

The daughter, Sophia Krüger was married to Joachim Rackow, as indicated in the record.  So far I have not located any children from this marriage.

Johann Friedrich Krüger was married to Engel Bruss (1755-1809) and they had many children:

  1. Michael Friedrich Krüger (1799-1870) married Anna Regina Stein.  They had four sons and three daughters.
  2. Sophia Krüger (1781-1805).  No known spouse or children.
  3. Johann Friedrich Erdmann Krüger (b 1783) married Catarina Maria Helm.  They had two sons and a daughter.  He emigrated to the US in 1839.
  4. Dorothea Maria Krüger (1784-1810).  No known spouse or children.
  5. Joachim Friedrich Krüger (1785-1836).  No known spouse or children.
  6. Engel Krüger (b 1790) married Michael Brendemühl.  No known children.
  7. Catharina Sophia Krüger (1794-1860) married Michael Helm and emigrated to Wisconsin.  They had 3 sons and 5 daughters.
  8. Martin Friedrich Krüger (b 1796) married Dorothea Maria Sophie Buhrow and emigrated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1839.  They had 3 sons and a daughter.

Krüger and Winter Records – Trieglaff, Kreis Greifenberg, Pommern, Prussia

The initial batch of records for the Winter and Krüger family in Trieglaff were obtained fo me by Martin Sohn.

Since then I have discovered that Trieglaff records are actually available online from the Polish national archives, so I’ll likely be adding to this collection in the future.  The records are online here, and go from 1842 to 1874 (presumably after which the more detailed civil records were used).

The Extended Family of Jens Rasmussen (1847-1923)

As I did with his wife Ovidia Olesdatter, this article will attempt to present a reasonably terse version of my research in the Norwegian archives for the family of Jens Rasmussen (a/k/a John Hanson) who was my great-great-grandfather.  I’ve already posted the story of his life as it was documented by his daughter Olga Hanson Schmidt.  This will give Jens’s entire five-generation tree back to his 2x great-grandparents (my 6x great-grandparents) and in some cases his 3x great-grandparents (my 7x great-grandparents).

[NOTE: I’d like to again thank Nina Karlsen whose help in finding Norwegian-language reference material was invaluable in preparing this history.]

Jens Rasmussen Tree

Jens Rasmussen was born 26 Jan 1847 on Østrem Farm in Lindås, Hordaland, Norway.  His parents were Rasmus Hansen Hellestvedt (1812-1862) and Sigri Andersdatter Østrem (1816-1905).  Jens was baptized in Lindås on 31 Jan 1847 and confirmed in Lindås on 29 Sept 1861.  In the 1865 Census for Lindås he is listed working as an 18-year old farm laborer on the farm of Lasse A. Knudsen.  A 23-year-old Jens left from Bergen for Québec on 22 May 1870 on the “Galathea”, arriving on 10 Jul 1870.  It was only one of many trips across the Atlantic he would make over the next 14 years.  He returned to Norway from Northern Wisconsin in 1884 and was living and working on Ryum Farm in Vikna, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway with his three brothers Rasmus, Andreas, & Hans when he met 17-year-old Ovidia Olesdatter.

He married Ovidia Olesdatter in Vikna, Nærøy, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway on 12 Sept 1884 where both bride and groom were listed as being from Ryum Farm.  Jens’s occupation was given as sailor.  The newlywed couple departed Bergan, Norway for New York, USA on 8 Oct 1884.  They settled on a homestead on the side of Rib Mountain near the town of Fleith, Wisconsin around 1889, and they both farmed there until the end of their lives.

Children of Jens Rasmussen and Ovidia Olesdatter (all born in Wisconsin): Roger Hanson (1887-1888), Olga Johanna Hanson (1891-1990), John Albert Hanson (1894-1980), Mabel Esther Hanson (1897-1992), Roy Sigvard Hanson (1900-1972).
